The French Embassy in Havana on Tuesday presented the Legion of Honor posthumously to Cuban ballerina Josefina Mendez, who died of cancer Jan. 26 at the age of 65.
Ambassador Marie-France Pagnier gave her country's highest honor for people in culture and the arts to Victor Gili, Mendez's son and lead dancer of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba.
The ceremony was attended by Ballet Nacional director Alicia Alonso, relatives and friends of the late dancer, the official AIN news agency reported.
The ceremony included the screening of a video of Mendez performing in 'Giselle' with French dancer Cyril Atanasoff at the Paris Opera in 1972, and a montage of highlights of the late dancer's 50-year career.
The late ballerina joins a long list of Cubans who have been awarded the Legion of Honor, including Alicia Alonso herself, Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Arts and Industry founder Alfredo Guevara, writer Miguel Barnet and surgeon Rodrigo Alvarez Cambra.
